Now my two cents:

Adaptability, Customer Focused thinking, and keeping updated in self improvement & market skills are all key to a successful career as a sales professional.

However, You must already have a "fire in the belly", a good positive can-do attitude and great communication skills.

I firmly believe and have proven that Communication is the #1 skill for any successful relationship (Personal or Business) in life. Excel at that, Excel at all!
