I would like to know how to recruit members in large numbers into our social club without making cold-calls.

Hi Debra,
what benefits would I gain from joining your club?
Maybe survey the existing members to find out what benefits they receive.
Then devise a function, like an information night, connected to some free food or some entertainment where you can explain to prospective members what they'll gain and how easy it is to get it.
Use the benefits members mention in your ad copy when promoting the event.
PS: You could also get members to recommend to friends after they have taken the survey, with a comment like, "given that the club gives you these benefits who else do you know who would like to have those same benefits?"
